Effect of breastfeeding protection measures on discharge rates in a third-level neonatology unit
Keywords:
Breastfeeding, Newborn, Premature, ProtocolAbstract
Objectives. To determine the effect of breastfeeding protection measures on discharge rates and the related profile.
Methods. Observational and retrospective study. Sample of 171 neonates.
Results. The incidence of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) was 63.8% (54.4% direct administration at the breast and 9.4% deferred administration via syringe or bottle). Formula feeding accounted for 10.5%, and mixed feeding (non-exclusive breastfeeding – NEBF) for 25.7%. There was a higher incidence among neonates discharged home compared to those admitted from deliveries (25.8% vs 9.7%, p = 0.012) and among those older than 32 weeks compared to younger ones (71% vs. 29%, p = 0.044).
Conclusions. The exclusive breastfeeding rate at discharge exceeded 50%; however, this figure seems insufficient. Providing Units with qualified staff in this area would improve EBF rates and, consequently, the health of the mother-neonate dyad.
