"We are the reference for calm."

In November 2025, the IX Nursing Conference of the Health Area of Lugo, A Mariña, and Monforte de Lemos was held, where nurses Paula Montoya and Iria Teijeiro stood out for their presentation on the management of agitation in patients with psychiatric conditions. They presented clinical cases that can occur in geriatrics, neurology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and emergency care, highlighting that one in five psychiatric patients in emergency services arrives in a state of agitation. They defined agitation as a state of motor and emotional restlessness that can lead to aggression, posing a risk to patients, family members, and healthcare professionals. They emphasized the role of nursing professionals as "references for calm," capable of transforming risky situations into opportunities for care through verbal and non-verbal communication, and, in severe cases, resorting to psychotropic drugs or physical restraint. They also noted that agitation episodes are more frequent in young people due to hormonal and emotional factors, while in older adults, they tend to manifest more subtly. Additionally, they highlighted that high temperatures and sleep disturbances in summer increase the incidence of these episodes. Finally, recent data on mental health in Spain were discussed, showing a significant rise in anxiety disorders and other mental health issues, particularly among individuals under 25 years old.
