Knowledge of young people from Ferrolterra regarding infection by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus
Abstract
Background: Nowadays, there is a large amount of information about sexuality and STIs available to society, and at times it is difficult to distinguish between accurate and misleading or distorted information. This places adolescents in a particularly vulnerable situation. The epidemiology and, especially, the etiology of HIV/AIDS have changed significantly in recent years in our country. Once again, the GALIA Galicia program has focused its interventions on HIV prevention through its health agents.
Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study. The population consisted of 274 young people aged between 14 and 18 years, in the context of several educational centers in the Ferrolterra area (A Coruña). Data were collected during November and December 2011 using a questionnaire developed in a focus group.
Results: 90% of respondents have information about HIV/AIDS, and 74% of this information comes from television. 61% believe that a person with HIV has AIDS. 77% of young people state that they have never been exposed to the virus, while only 4% have undergone the detection test.
Discussion: Although information about HIV/AIDS appears to be accessible to everyone, contradictory responses are observed, which may be related to the lack of "clear" information not distorted by the media or society. The surveyed youth do not consider the possibility of being in contact with HIV, and this lack of awareness remains a determining risk factor for future infections.
