Keywords:
family caregivers, Dementia, ICUB97, care, repercussionsAbstract
Objectives: To understand family caregiving patterns and their impact on caregivers of people with dementia in Galicia.
Methodology: Observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. Data were collected using the validated ICUB97 questionnaire from 131 family caregivers associated with Alzheimer’s and other Dementia Family Associations in Galicia.
Results: The profile of family caregivers of people with dementia is that of a 58.8-year-old woman, daughter, with primary education, who has been caregiving for 3 to 5 years. The most common tasks involve assisting with instrumental activities of daily living. The most reported consequences affect leisure time, recreation, and rest.
Conclusions: The results highlight the need for intervention within this group, making individualized and comprehensive follow-up of people with dementia and their caregivers appropriate.
