Seasonal flu vaccination in pregnant and postpartum women

Pregnant women and newborns are population groups at risk of complications and hospitalization related to seasonal flu. Infection by the flu virus during the first trimester of pregnancy has been associated with an increased incidence of cardiac malformations, cleft lip, and neural tube defects, while during the second and third trimesters, it has been linked to a higher number of miscarriages and premature births. Other authors also add delayed child growth to the list of concerns.
Vaccination has proven to be a protective factor against several of these problems and respiratory diseases, and it is safe during any trimester of pregnancy. Generally, vaccination is recommended for pregnant and postpartum women (up to 6 months postpartum). The vaccine has been shown to be safe for both the woman and the fetus. Side effects are rare, and when they occur, they are usually local and/or mild in nature.
The World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health, and the Galician Health Service (SERGAS) classify this group as a priority for seasonal flu vaccination. This year, SERGAS launched a sequential vaccination campaign, allowing these women to access the vaccine starting November 14th.
