The nursing profession in Lugo during the second half of the 19th century* (I)
Keywords:
History, Nursing, SocietyAbstract
The City Council, which had already placed the Daughters of Charity at the helm of the House of Beneficence with highly satisfactory results, decided to entrust them with the administration and nursing of the Hospital. However, the decision of the Lugo authorities was not based solely on the effective work carried out at the House of Beneficence but also on the solid professional training that certified the sisters as admirable nurses and skilled managers. Their nursing model, grounded in a solid theoretical education acquired in their own schools; validated by their management in leading institutions, such as the Hospital of Santa Cruz in Barcelona or the Inclusa in Madrid; and subsequently reaffirmed as administrators of the majority of hospitals in the country, would make them reference nurses for healthcare and charitable establishments, both public and private, whether civilian or military.
