Abstract

Under normal conditions, intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) is the pressure within the abdominal cavity. It is equal to atmospheric pressure, meaning zero "0," if the patient is not undergoing mechanical ventilation and is in the supine position, or even subatmospheric in newborns diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia. IAP can experience transient physiological increases during respiratory movements, coughing, sneezing, defecation, etc., or progressively, as in pregnancy, peritoneal dialysis treatment, or the presence of ascites.
