Abstract

Nursing care on an Oceanic Vessel (OV) during rescue operations is complex —out-of-hospital setting, language barriers, etc.— and largely unknown; characterized by a growing massive demand for assistance and limited resources. The aim of this study is to identify the healthcare interventions carried out by nursing professionals.
A descriptive observational study was conducted on the healthcare data from the OV Río Segura (Operation Triton, FRONTEX). The sample included navigation missions in Italy, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Greece between 22/IX/2015 and 01/XI/2015, and from 25/VIII/2016 to 15/X/2016.
Results: A total of 3280 triages (5 migrant rescues) were performed, with 8 deaths occurring outside the OV. Of the rescued individuals, 73.84% were males and 15.67% were minors of both sexes. There were 3833 healthcare interventions: 86% related to hygiene and nutrition, and 4% to infectious-contagious diseases; 14.48% required immediate medical attention, and 0.2% required evacuation from the vessel due to severity.
Nursing plays a critical healthcare role in humanitarian missions. Recording the pathologies addressed will enable the study of demands, the planning of future needs, and the development of action protocols.
