Abstract

Less than a year ago, nurse prescription was regulated, similar to other Western countries. This legislation has sparked a debate encompassing two main aspects of reflection. On one hand, the necessary training of professionals to access this competency, and on the other, determining which drugs and medical products are eligible for such prescription.
A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using an anonymous survey of 91 nursing professionals from the Lucus Augusti Hospital and health centers in the city of Lugo.
Of the respondents, 87% (79) were female. The average number of years worked was 18 (0-40). 24% (22) held a bachelor's degree, and 68% (62) were diploma holders. 66% (60) supported nurse prescription, but only 40% (36) had read the Decree regulating this prescription.
The products considered most suitable for prescription were dressings and antiseptics, followed by analgesics and vaccines. Only 9% (8) supported prescribing antibiotics.
Variables associated with supporting nurse prescription included being male, having less professional experience, holding a bachelor's/specialist/doctoral degree, and having read the Decree.
The lack of unanimity within the profession regarding nurse prescription is noteworthy. Furthermore, there is significant ignorance about its regulation and implications, as well as considerable variability concerning the drugs eligible for prescription.
