Update on umbilical cord care. Latest recommendations.

Main objective: updating umbilical cord care during the first days of life.
Methodology: A review of the main clinical guidelines and scientific literature available in databases such as Pubmed, Cuiden, Scielo, and search engines like Google Scholar and Mergullador was conducted.
Results: The application of chlorhexidine to the cord reduces neonatal mortality and omphalitis risk in babies born at home in high neonatal mortality settings. The use of alcohol on the umbilical cord resulted in a longer cord detachment time compared to dry care; moreover, the risk of developing omphalitis and sepsis was similar to the application of other antiseptics. Dry cord care shortens the detachment time compared to chlorhexidine application.
Conclusions: There is sufficient evidence to recommend umbilical cord care with chlorhexidine in developing countries or home births. However, in our context, cleaning with warm water and neutral soap, followed by meticulous drying, and emphasizing keeping the cord dry at all times would be sufficient.
