Abstract

During the first half of 2026, the Official College of Nursing of Lugo carried out intense institutional, educational, social and professional representation activity, strengthening its commitment to the nursing profession, the public and active collaboration with public and private institutions in the health, social, academic and community sectors.

Throughout these months, the College took part in events, conferences, institutional meetings, solidarity initiatives and professional gatherings that highlighted the essential role of nursing in health promotion, care for people, the defence of professional rights and the development of a more humane, safe and accessible healthcare system.

Key activities included participation in the presentation of the SexSan 2026-2030 Plan, aimed at improving sexual health from a comprehensive, preventive, educational and community-based perspective. Collaboration with the education sector was also strengthened through the signing of an agreement with FAPACEL for the 2025-2026 academic year, aimed at turning schoolchildren into agents of health and prevention.

The solidarity dimension of the profession was reflected in actions promoted together with Solidarity Nursing and Red Cross Lugo, through the delivery of hygiene kits and warm clothing to homeless people as part of the “Your Well-being Matters” campaign. These initiatives highlighted nursing’s commitment to the dignity, health and social well-being of people in vulnerable situations.

The College also participated in spaces aimed at recognising and promoting nursing research, such as the 5th Nursing Research Awards of the General Nursing Council of Spain, and advanced cooperation with social organisations by signing a collaboration agreement with COGAMI, designed to promote learning, inclusion and professional development experiences.

Educational and institutional activity included the College’s General Assembly, as well as participation in an interdisciplinary conference on the National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance, held at the College of Pharmacists of Lugo. The institution also showed its support for social organisations such as Down Lugo, taking part in the gala held to mark World Down Syndrome Day.

In April, the College participated in the Regional Ministry of Health conference on the new law for the prevention and comprehensive protection against attacks on healthcare professionals, as well as in the 29th National and 23rd International Nursing Conference of the University School of Nursing of Lugo, a forum for scientific updating and the visibility of nursing knowledge.

On 12 May, to mark International Nurses Day, COE Lugo organised a programme of activities that included a commemorative event at Lucus Augusti University Hospital, an outreach stand at As Termas Shopping Centre and the screening of the film Late Shift, followed by a debate on the reality of care, healthcare pressure and the professional challenges faced by nurses.

The College’s presence continued at the 36th International Congress of Geriatrics and Gerontology, held in Lugo, and at the academic ceremony of the 14th Cohort of the Nursing Degree of the University School of Nursing of Lugo, showing institutional support for the new generations of professionals.

In June, the College held meetings related to nursing education and research with representatives of the iTERRA institute and the Terra Campus of the University of Santiago de Compostela, as well as an institutional meeting with the President of the Provincial Council of Lugo, within the framework of collaboration with public administrations.

The first half of 2026 leaves a clear balance: an active, approachable, supportive nursing profession with its own voice. A nursing profession that cares, accompanies, transforms and moves forward alongside society.
