Abstract

The Galician Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics (SGXX) will hold its 1st Nursing Conference on 16 October 2026 in Vigo, under the theme “Caring for Older Adults: A Shared Responsibility of the Entire Nursing Profession”.

The initiative follows on from the proposals raised during the nursing meeting held as part of the 36th International Congress of Geriatrics and Gerontology, where professionals from different fields agreed on the need to create nursing-specific spaces to share experiences, promote coordination and jointly address the challenges related to caring for older adults.

Population ageing calls for progress towards more humane, safer and better-coordinated care. In this context, Geriatric Nursing plays a specialised and essential role, providing specific knowledge and competencies to understand the complexity of ageing, prevent frailty, preserve functional capacity and promote autonomy. However, caring for older adults is a shared responsibility of the entire nursing profession, regardless of specialty or area of practice.

The conference aims to bring together professionals from different fields and specialties, with a particular focus on coordination and continuity of care across hospital, primary, community, social-health and residential settings. The importance of collaboration with Nursing Care Assistants and with all other professionals involved in the care of older adults is also emphasised.

The scientific programme will be structured around four main thematic areas: comprehensive care for older adults; Geriatric Nursing and shared responsibility; humanisation, dignity and rights; and nursing evidence, innovation and excellence. Topics will include the prevention of frailty, falls and dependency; the promotion of autonomy and healthy ageing; Geriatric Nursing competencies; coordination between care settings; respect for the rights of older adults; prevention of ageism, abuse and infantilisation; and evidence-based nursing practice.

The conference will also include a scientific infographic format, aimed at encouraging professional participation and making visible the knowledge generated through clinical practice. Submissions may include protocols, clinical practice guidelines, care algorithms, assessment tools, good practices, innovative experiences and research or quality improvement projects. Works may be submitted in Spanish, Galician or Portuguese until 20 September 2026, with acceptance notifications scheduled for 1 October.

Two prizes will be awarded for the best infographics: a first prize of 200 euros and a second prize of 100 euros. Assessment criteria will include scientific rigour, clarity, visual quality, usefulness for professional practice, originality and relevance to the conference theme.

The 1st Nursing Conference of the SGXX is conceived as a space for meeting, training and professional participation, aimed at sharing knowledge, strengthening collaboration among professionals and promoting care for older adults based on scientific evidence, excellence and humanisation. It will take place on Friday, 16 October 2026, at the Álvaro Cunqueiro Hospital in Vigo. Information on the programme, registration and submission of works will be available at www.sgxx.org.
