Abstract

The 36th International Congress of Geriatrics and Gerontology of the Galician Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics (SGXX), held on 22 and 23 May 2026 in Lugo, brought together more than 300 participants under the theme “Living Longer, Living Better: Dignity, Rights and Care in Longevity”. The event addressed the main challenges arising from population ageing and the need to move towards care models better suited to an increasingly complex healthcare reality.

Within the Congress, the round table “Nursing Meeting in the Geriatric Field” was of particular importance. Promoted at the initiative of the Official College of Nursing of Lugo, this space aimed to give voice to nurses working in the care of older adults and to learn, from their direct experience, about their needs, difficulties and proposals for improvement.

The meeting included representatives of the nursing profession from different Galician provinces, including the presidents of the Official Colleges of Nursing of Lugo, Ourense and Pontevedra, as well as the Nursing Section of the SGXX. The session stood out for its participatory nature and for the diversity of professionals attending, from hospitals, nursing homes, day centres, home care, community care and the university sector.

The discussion highlighted shared concerns, especially the need to improve coordination between health and social care resources involved in the care of older adults. The importance of recognising and developing the specialty of Geriatric Nursing was also emphasised, as well as making better use of the specific training of specialist nurses in areas such as frailty, dependency, functional and cognitive decline, polypharmacy, prevention of complications and promotion of autonomy.

One of the main conclusions was the need to give continuity to this space by organising future specific Geriatric Nursing meetings. These would allow participants to explore the issues raised in greater depth, promote the exchange of experiences and build proposals to improve both professional practice and care for older adults.

The meeting held in Lugo therefore represents a starting point for strengthening geriatric nursing, making its contribution more visible and moving towards more coordinated, specialised care centred on the dignity of older adults.
