Abstract

On 12 May, to mark International Nurses Day, the Official College of Nursing of Lugo organised a programme of activities aimed at highlighting the value of the nursing profession, bringing care closer to the public and reaffirming the essential role of nurses in society.

The celebration combined culture, health outreach and a symbolic presence in representative spaces across the province. One of the main events was the screening of the film “Turno de guardia” at Yelmo Cinemas in Lugo, located in As Termas Shopping Centre. After the screening, a round table was held, where professionals and attendees reflected on nursing, care, healthcare responsibility and the current challenges facing the health system.

Another key element of the day was the installation of an information stand by the College at As Termas Shopping Centre. Throughout the day, nurses from Lugo provided information, answered health-related questions and carried out outreach activities related to the science of care. This space highlighted the importance of health education, prevention, well-being promotion and the close relationship between nursing and the community.

The symbolic dimension of the commemoration was marked by the blue illumination of several emblematic buildings and monuments. In Lugo, the Roman Wall, in the Mosqueira area, and the Town Hall were lit in blue. Burela also joined the celebration by illuminating its Town Hall and prominent squares, while in Monforte de Lemos, the Tower of Homage was lit blue in recognition of the work of nurses.

The celebration also served as a reminder that International Nurses Day commemorates the birth of Florence Nightingale, a key figure in modern nursing, and provides an opportunity to recognise the profession’s contribution to the health of individuals, communities and healthcare systems.

Through these activities, the Official College of Nursing of Lugo reaffirmed its commitment to the social visibility of the profession, the defence of care and the creation of meeting spaces with the public. The day conveyed a clear message: care is essential to community life, and nursing is a fundamental pillar of collective health.
