Abstract

On 12 November 2025, the Lucus Augusti University Hospital in Lugo (HULA) hosted the Northern Interprovincial Meeting: “The Present and Future of School Nursing in Spain”, organised by the ACEESE Group, which includes ACISE, ACEESE and ISNA, with the support of the Official College of Nursing of Lugo.

The event brought together nursing professionals, representatives from the education sector, associations, social organisations and people interested in health promotion in schools. Its main aim was to create a space for reflection, updating and debate on the current situation of school nursing in Galicia and Spain, as well as to analyse the challenges and opportunities for its future development.

The opening session included representatives from the Official College of Nursing of Lugo, ANPE Galicia, FAPACEL, ANPAS Galegas and ANEDIA. Afterwards, Dr Gràcia Soler Pardo, President of the ACEESE Group and an expert in school nursing, delivered the keynote lecture entitled “The Present and Future of School Nursing in Spain”, addressing the need for the stable implementation of this professional role in educational centres.

Throughout the meeting, key issues were discussed, including the role and functions of the school nurse, the professional competencies required, health education, prevention, promotion of healthy habits and the implementation of World Health Organization guidelines on school health services.

The first round table, “School Nursing: The Lugo Reality”, highlighted specific experiences developed in Lugo, as well as identified needs and proposals for improvement. The second round table, “The Situation of School Nurses in Galicia”, addressed the diversity of existing models, the experience accumulated in Galician schools and the need to move towards a more structured and recognised presence of school nursing.

The meeting concluded with an open debate and a closing session led by Isidoro Rodríguez Pérez, President of the Academy of Nursing of Galicia. The event left a clear message: school nursing is a present need to improve prevention, address complex health situations, promote healthy habits, support families and contribute to safer, more inclusive and better-prepared schools.
