Abstract

On 14 and 15 April 2026, the 29th National and 22nd International Nursing Conference of Lugo took place in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Lugo Campus. This well-established event once again brought together students, lecturers, clinical professionals, researchers and institutional representatives around nursing science, education, innovation and care.

Under the leadership of Pilar Penela Puga, Director of the University School of Nursing of Lugo, the Conference was conceived as a collective project, supported by the Organising and Scientific Committees, the School’s management and services staff, and the IT Service of Lucus Augusti University Hospital. This edition stood out for its participatory, international and highly educational nature.

The opening lecture, delivered by Inés Rivas Fernández, addressed the micromineral status in Galicia as an opportunity for public health action. Based on a population-based study involving 456 healthy adults from the province of Lugo, serum concentrations of several trace elements were analysed, highlighting low selenium levels in part of the population. This presentation underlined one of the central ideas of the Conference: nursing not only applies knowledge, but also raises questions, conducts research and generates its own science.

Throughout the programme, round tables and communications addressed innovation in nursing, the transfer of evidence into clinical practice, the complexity of care, mental health, geriatrics, cardiovascular prevention, preventive oncology, stroke, neurological nursing, international health, cooperation, military nursing, volunteering and Service-Learning. Contributions from professionals from Spain, Brazil, Portugal and Turkey strengthened the international dimension of the event.

One of the main features of the Conference was the active participation of students, who presented communications, research projects, educational experiences and final degree projects. Their presence showed that university education must offer real opportunities to develop research skills, communicate results and build a scientific professional identity from undergraduate training onwards.

The Conference also included practical workshops on intraosseous access and continuous glucose monitoring, allowing scientific evidence to be transferred into technical and clinical learning. In addition, the importance of volunteering, communication, listening skills and contact with social organisations was highlighted as essential elements in nursing education.

The 2026 edition left a legacy of collective affirmation of nursing as a scientific, autonomous, human and socially committed profession. The Conference is thus consolidated as a national and international meeting space where science, care, education and community come together to imagine and build the future of the profession.
