Abstract

The Official College of Nursing of Lugo has awarded the 2026 Practicante Faustino Vilar Award to Lourdes Bermello López, a nurse with an exemplary career marked by clinical practice, teaching, research, professional leadership, international cooperation and the defence of Nursing as an autonomous, scientific and deeply human discipline.

Born in Ourense in 1974, Lourdes Bermello graduated in Nursing from the University School of Nursing of Lugo, University of Santiago de Compostela. She began her professional career in the Galician Health Service in 1996 and currently works at the Lucus Augusti University Hospital, in the Neurology Nursing consultation, combining clinical care with university teaching and research.

Her clinical career is closely linked to the care of people with neurological conditions, particularly multiple sclerosis and acute stroke. She is currently enrolled in the PhD Programme in Neuroscience and Clinical Psychology at the University of Santiago de Compostela, with a research project focused on the effectiveness of health education as a nursing intervention in quality of life and symptoms of anxiety and depression in people with multiple sclerosis.

In addition to her clinical work, Lourdes Bermello has developed an extensive teaching career at the University School of Nursing of Lugo, training new generations with scientific rigour, ethical commitment and professional pride. She also served as President of the Official College of Nursing of Lugo from 2010 to 2023, a period during which she promoted the visibility, continuing education and institutional defence of the profession.

Her professional commitment continues through her involvement in the Academy of Nursing of Galicia, the College’s Deontological Committee, healthcare and training committees, and the Spanish Society of Neurological Nursing. She also has a significant scientific output in the history of Nursing, neurological care, health education, feminism and the nursing profession.

The text also highlights her eleven years of international cooperation in Peru and Nicaragua, where she developed training projects, healthcare initiatives and community health promotion programmes, with particular sensitivity towards women’s rights and sexual education.

The award recognises not only an outstanding curriculum, but also a way of understanding Nursing based on knowledge, humanity, leadership, professional advocacy and commitment to people.
