On 29 May 2026, the Illustrious Official College of Nursing of Lugo held its traditional Nursing Celebration: Tribute to Professional Excellence at A Fortaleza restaurant. The event brought together nurses, institutional representatives, families and members of the healthcare community to recognise professional careers, vocations and commitments linked to nursing in Lugo.
The President of the College, Eva Gómez Fernández, opened the ceremony by highlighting the meaning of the celebration: paying tribute to professionals with 25 years of membership, recognising those beginning their retirement after a lifetime devoted to nursing, and presenting the Practicante Faustino Vilar Award, the College’s highest distinction.
Throughout the evening, the value of nursing excellence was acknowledged in all its dimensions: clinical practice, teaching, research, management, community care, institutional work and social commitment. The tribute to professionals with 25 years of membership symbolised professional maturity, accumulated experience and sustained commitment to care. Likewise, the recognition of retired professionals offered public gratitude for their legacy, dedication and contribution to the dignity of the nursing profession.
Research also played a prominent role with the presentation of the “Muralla de Lugo” Scientific Awards 2026, aimed at promoting scientific participation among registered nurses. The award-winning projects addressed topics such as contraception knowledge in nursing, smoking prevention among adolescents and knowledge of basic life support.
The most emotional moment of the evening was the presentation of the Practicante Faustino Vilar Award to Lourdes Bermello López, in recognition of an exemplary career marked by leadership, institutional defence of the profession, teaching, research and her contribution to the social visibility of nursing.
The celebration was attended by a broad institutional, healthcare, academic and professional representation, reflecting the social and professional support for nursing in Lugo. The President emphasised that nursing faces major challenges, but also has greater competencies, leadership and collective strength to continue progressing as an autonomous, scientific and deeply human discipline.
The evening concluded as a night of tribute, gratitude and fellowship, reaffirming pride in belonging to a profession that is essential to the healthcare system and to society.
