Abstract

This text presents the personal and professional career of Jesús “Suso” Lamela Escobar, a nurse from Lugo who recently retired after 46 years of professional practice in the Galician Health Service. Although he was never formally qualified as a practicante, his figure embodies the social meaning that this term still holds in rural Galicia: a healthcare professional with scientific knowledge, a strong vocation for service, closeness to the community and personal kindness.

Born in Rosindo, Castroverde, in the mid-1950s, Jesús Lamela grew up in a family closely linked to healthcare, with a grandfather who was a physician and a father who was a practicante. This family tradition strongly influenced his professional choice. He studied at the School of Technical Health Assistants in Santiago de Compostela between 1975 and 1978, later completed his university diploma in Nursing and obtained the occupational health nursing qualification, formerly known as Company ATS.

His professional career began in 1978 in A Pastoriza, where he worked for 20 years as a district ATS and home public healthcare practitioner. In 1998, he joined the Fingoi Health Centre, where he worked for another 26 years and eventually became its coordinator. Throughout his career, he was recognised for his professionalism, problem-solving skills, approachable character and commitment to colleagues, students and the people under his care.

One of the areas he most enjoyed was minor surgery, together with the opportunity to help people directly. He also contributed to the clinical training of nursing students in Lugo. The text highlights his humanistic view of nursing, his confidence in the future of the profession and his belief that personal care will remain essential, even in a context increasingly shaped by new technologies and artificial intelligence.

The profile concludes with a deeply vocational reflection: Jesús Lamela feels fully satisfied with the profession he chose and states that, if he could go back, he would become a nurse again. His greatest memory is having had the opportunity to help many people throughout his working life.
