Elvira López Mourín: the Nurse Who Was Ahead of Her Time.

Elvira López Mourín (1893–1961) was a Galician-born professional and military nurse whose life reflects the rise of modern nursing in Spain and the demands of early 20th‑century conflict. Trained in Madrid within the Spanish Red Cross system, she belonged to the first generation of professionally educated nurses. Her most emblematic moment came on 1 November 1922, during the Rif War, when she volunteered to join a surgical team transported by aircraft from Melilla to Dar Drius—a risky night mission at a time when women were generally barred from military flights. Her participation made her a landmark figure linked to the first Spanish sanitary flight and the origins of aeromedical evacuation. Afterward, she continued a long career in military healthcare, later serving within the Army’s auxiliary nursing structure in Madrid, enduring the political upheavals of the Republic, Civil War and dictatorship. She retired in 1958 and died in Madrid in 1961. Today, renewed research, tributes and public recognition have helped restore her place in nursing, military and aviation history.
