Emotional well-being in nursing education: a project to care for future professionals

Nursing has always been deeply connected to the human dimension of care, evolving from a profession focused on technical knowledge to one that integrates emotional competencies. Recent trends reveal alarming levels of stress, anxiety, and loneliness among young students, particularly in health sciences. This paradox arises during a time when mental health occupies a central place in public debate, yet effective preventive structures remain insufficient in educational environments.
María José Ferreira Díaz, nurse and professor at the Nursing School of Lugo, has developed an innovative research project titled “Effectiveness of a Multifaceted Intervention to Improve Emotional Well-being through the Mediaverso Platform in Nursing Students.” This project addresses emotional well-being through a 12-week experimental study combining mindfulness practices, physical activity, and digital tools. Students are divided into two groups: one participates in the intervention, while the other continues with their routine as a control group.
The Mediaverso platform, supported by the Xunta de Galicia, offers digital resources alongside in-person sessions, enabling students to develop self-care strategies in their daily lives. Key indicators such as perceived stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being are evaluated using validated instruments.
This initiative highlights the importance of emotional preparation for future caregivers. Nursing students face unique challenges, including academic demands and early exposure to human suffering, which can impact their emotional health and professional development. By fostering emotional well-being in educational settings, this project aims to improve not only students’ personal lives but also the quality of future healthcare services.
This research represents a crucial step toward integrating preventive and educational strategies into university environments, creating stronger, more conscious, and humane caregivers.
