The Importance of Deontology in Professional Nursing Practice

Deontology in the professional field refers to the set of rules and principles that govern the behavior and duties of a specific profession. The term was first introduced in 1836 by the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham, who defined it as the science of morality, emphasizing the correct behavior professionals should adopt in their work. In nursing, deontological norms establish the minimum duties required of practitioners to ensure the well-being of society. Unlike ethics, which addresses universal principles of right and wrong and emphasizes individual autonomy and moral reflection, deontology is more specific and focuses on the obligations and standards of conduct within a profession. These norms are typically established by professional organizations, such as the General Nursing Council in Spain. The Code of Ethics is a key document that outlines the values, duties, and responsibilities of professionals, ensuring ethical practices and fostering a collective moral consciousness within the nursing profession.
