Green Nurse and planetary health: Nursing leadership in the sustainability of the health system.
Keywords:
Green Nurse, Planet health, Sustainability, Environmental impactAbstract
Climate change represents one of the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century. Paradoxically, healthcare systems significantly contribute to global environmental impact through energy consumption, waste generation and the extensive use of single-use medical products. In this context, nursing, as one of the largest professional groups within healthcare systems and with close contact with patients and communities, plays a strategic role in promoting more sustainable models of care. The concept of the Green Nurse proposes integrating environmental sustainability into the nursing metaparadigm by linking patient care with environmental protection. This approach encourages responsible clinical practices, efficient resource management and health education focused on sustainable lifestyles. The consolidation of this model positions nursing as a key actor in promoting planetary health and advancing the transition toward resilient and environmentally responsible healthcare systems.
