Perception of Occupational Risk in Nursing: Experience of the Central Sterilization Department
Keywords:
Sterilization, Occupational risk, Perception, NursingAbstract
Introduction: The Central Equipment and Sterilization Department plays a critical role in preventing nosocomial infections through proper sterilization of medical supplies.
Objective: This study aimed to analyze occupational risk perception among nursing staff working in the department.
Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted in a secondary-level general hospital in Tampico. All nursing staff assigned to Sterilization Department (n = 16) were included. The Dimensional Evaluation of Perceived Risk at Work instrument and a sociodemographic survey were applied. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 26, employing non-parametric tests.
Results: Overall, 87.5% of staff perceived a medium level of risk, yet they recognized that potential adverse events could have significant consequences for their health. No significant associations were found between risk perception and sociodemographic or work-related variables.
Conclusions: Risk perception may be more influenced by organizational or cultural factors not evaluated in this study, highlighting the need to strengthen occupational safety in technical areas such as Sterilization Department.
