Background: Sleep plays an important role in the recovery of hospitalized patients. However, its quality is compromised by multiple intrinsic and extrinsic factors.
Objective: To analyze the sleep-rest pattern of hospitalized patients in the coloproctology unit through a joint analysis of the questionnaires.
Methodology: Observational, descriptive study with consecutive sampling of patients admitted to the coloproctology unit of Lucus Augusti University Hospital. Three structured questionnaires were administered, including a modified version of the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire and two ad hoc questionnaires, at 48 hours postoperatively and at hospital discharge. Clinical, environmental, and sociodemographic variables were collected. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were performed to identify associations between independent variables and sleep quality.
Results: A total of 100 patients were included. The main diagnosis was left hemicolectomy (23%). During the entire hospital stay, the participants experienced sleep disturbances. The main disruptive factors identified were pain and concern. At discharge, 68.7% of the participants reported being unable to fall back asleep after the nursing care.
Conclusions: Hospital sleep is characterized by frequent interruptions and shallow sleep, affecting both sleep latency and effectiveness. Participants described pain, anxiety, and care routines as the most influential factors, but only the use of hypnotics showed a statistically significant association. The results reinforce the need to prioritize patient rest during hospitalization.
